Most studies and media coverage about magic mushrooms Canada focus on younger people, so it’s rare to see seniors represented. Yet, with growing research showing that psilocybin from magic mushrooms can help with cancer-related distress, many older adults are curious about trying them, but aren’t sure if it’s safe or suitable.

The good news is that magic mushrooms can be relevant for older adults, too. This was highlighted in a 2024 study and in a video by The Cut, where three older women shared their experiences with psilocybin.

Magic Mushrooms Are Safe For Seniors

There is always a concern when older adults want to try shrooms or other psychedelics because of how they may interact with the body and the medications older adults take. However, it’s reassuring to know that shrooms can be used safely if certain precautions are taken first. Here is some evidence that they can still be used.

Three Older Ladies Enjoying Shrooms

In a video shared by The Cut, three women embarked on a guided psychedelic trip using psilocybin mushrooms. Participants Robbie (66), Karen (69), and Paula (75) were given dried mushrooms under careful supervision. None of them experienced a bad trip or serious adverse reactions. Paula did vomit at one point, but for the most part, the experience was insightful and positive.

During the trip, they engaged in simple, enjoyable activities such as observing rocks, playing with clay, and doing light movement or exercise.

Robbie experienced a spiritual reconnection with her sister, while Karen reflected on her marriage and the idea that some people have a single love in their life, while others may have multiple. Paula joked that she had been hoping an elephant would appear so she could ride it.

All three women expressed interest in trying the experience again, provided it’s in a controlled setting with supervision. Overall, they found the experience meaningful and enjoyable.

Cohort Study of Psychedelics in Older Adults

A 2024 cohort study investigated the effects of psychedelics on Older Adults (OA) who are suffering from anxiety, low mood, and loneliness. This has been studied already multiple times, but in different age groups.

Subject62 OA (aged ≥60) and 62 matched Young Adults (YA) completed surveys at multiple time points: two weeks before, the day of, and two weeks, four weeks, and six months after a psychedelic group session.
ResultsOA experienced improvements in well-being. A lifetime psychiatric diagnosis predicted greater well-being gains in OA. Acute subjective psychedelic effects were less intense in OA than in YA.

These findings show that guided psychedelic group sessions can improve well-being in older adults, consistent with findings in younger populations. However, acute psychedelic effects are weaker and less predictive of well-being improvements in OA, whereas social and relational aspects of the group experience play a larger role.

Taking Shrooms as An Older Adult

It seems that psilocybin isn’t just therapeutic and enjoyable for younger individuals. Older adults can also explore the effects of mushrooms, but they need to be much more careful when doing so. If you are interested in trying it, here’s what you should do first.

Magic mushrooms can come in different forms, just like marijuana. You can now find a variety of psilocybin products, from dried mushrooms to capsules. Even better, some products come with premeasured doses, so you don’t have to worry about taking too little or too much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which medications should not be taken with psilocybin?

Antidepressants such as MAOIs, TCAs, SNRIs, and similar drugs may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome or cause unpredictable reactions when combined with psilocybin. Other substances like lithium, stimulants, depressants, certain migraine medications, and some heart or thyroid drugs may also pose safety risks.

Can older adults with Alzheimer’s take psilocybin?

There are currently no clinical studies showing how psilocybin affects people with Alzheimer’s disease, so its safety and effectiveness are still unknown. However, theories suggest it may have potential as a treatment. Psilocybin may address neurotransmitter imbalances and support brain-related pathways linked to Alzheimer’s disease. More research is needed before it can be considered safe for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.

Can I take shrooms if I have a heart condition?

If you have a heart condition, shrooms can carry risks and should be approached with caution. Psilocybin interacts with cardiac 5-HT2B receptors, and in theory, this could increase the risk of valve disease in a similar way to other serotonin receptor agonists. Because of these potential effects, consult a doctor before using psilocybin.
