Magic mushrooms Windsor is now being studied to better understand its effects on patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While previous studies have examined psilocybin’s potential benefits, none have been conducted in Windsor until now.

Windsor-based company Halucenex is growing its own magic mushrooms and synthesizing their active compound, psilocybin. Researchers hope this approach will demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of psilocybin-assisted treatment for PTSD.

Clinical Trial To Examine Magic Mushrooms As Treatment For PTSD

Halucenex Life Sciences Inc. conducted the province’s first clinical trial involving psilocybin for treating post-traumatic stress disorder.

“We’re very eager to review the results and see how this treatment affects PTSD. I believe it could provide the major reset many people need to move forward,” said David James, chief science officer of Halucenex.

The trial began earlier in 2022 and ended in March 2023.

Patients started with a 10-milligram microdose. After one week, they returned for a larger, 25-milligram dose.

“Twenty-five milligrams is sufficient to achieve what we’re aiming for, a full mental reset for PTSD,” said James, who also holds a PhD in chemistry.

Nurse Brenda Perks, who supported and assisted participants as they went through their psychedelic sessions, said, “Through these trials, we aim to reduce the fear and anxiety associated with what are commonly called psychedelic drugs… The goal is to build broader support and challenge outdated perceptions about psychedelics.”

Senior Vice-President Of Business Development Shared His Experience

Although none of the trial participants was available to comment, Don Hunter, the company’s senior vice-president of business development, said he underwent psilocybin treatment himself.

After conducting months of research and trying numerous PTSD therapies over several years, Hunter chose to drink psilocybin tea at a facility in Costa Rica.

He described the psychedelic experience as feeling like he was digging through his trauma and buried thoughts. “I was chipping through a wall, but still didn’t know where I was going,” he said, describing the sensation of being on a psilocybin trip.

After several hours, he said he felt as though he had finally broken through the wall and could confront thoughts he had long suppressed. He cautioned that psilocybin is not a cure-all, noting that additional treatment may still be necessary. However, he said the experience shifted his mindset. It made him less reactive and more open and compassionate toward others.

Clinical Trial Findings

Halucenex Life Sciences Inc and its wholly-owned subsidiary have reported encouraging outcomes in using psilocybin to treat treatment-resistant PTSD. Among the first five patients who received two doses of the company’s psilocybin solution, Lucenex, 80% achieved full remission of PTSD symptoms.

The same patients also showed substantial improvements in mood, with depression scores falling by 57% and anxiety scores dropping by 50% from the start of treatment to day 44. The study is still in progress, with 13 more patients expected to participate.

Do Other Studies Agree With Halucenex Life Sciences Inc’s Findings?

Yes. As mentioned, Halucenex Life Sciences Inc. is not the first company to test the effects of psilocybin on PTSD patients, but its findings show outcomes similar to those of other studies.

Open-Label Phase 2 Clinical Trial

Researchers from King’s College London, the University of Bath, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and the James J. Peters Bronx Veterans Affairs Hospital assessed the safety and tolerability of a single dose of COMP360 psilocybin in adults with PTSD

Through analysis of participant interviews, the researchers identified four central themes:

  • The role of psychological safety and trust
  • The experiential aspects of psilocybin therapy
  • The emergence of trauma-related content during sessions
  • Participants’ comparisons between psilocybin and previous treatments.

Many participants noted that, unlike traditional therapies that involve repeatedly revisiting traumatic memories, psilocybin enabled a more indirect processing of trauma through emotional, physical, and self-transcendent experiences. The researchers concluded that psilocybin, when combined with preparation and therapeutic support, could offer a valuable treatment approach for PTSD.

Animal Study

A team of researchers in China explored psilocybin’s effects on PTSD. The study was led by Dr. Liming Zhang of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Neuropsychopharmacology and Dr. Guyan Wang from Capital Medical University, and was published in the Chinese Medical Journal on March 30, 2023.

The researchers used a sound-based fear conditioning model in mice to measure how long the animals remained frozen in response to a learned threat. The animals were then evaluated for both short- and long-term fear reduction.

The mice treated with psilocybin showed greater fear extinction compared to untreated mice. Their analysis revealed that psilocybin-treated mice maintained healthy dendritic structure and density in the hippocampus, similar to control mice, while untreated mice showed marked reductions in dendritic complexity

Frequently Asked Questions

Will PTSD go away if you take psilocybin?

Psilocybin shows promising results in treating PTSD, but it is not a guaranteed cure. Early research suggests it may help reduce symptoms and support emotional healing, especially when combined with therapy.

How does psilocybin therapy compare to standard PTSD treatment methods?

Psilocybin therapy differs from standard PTSD treatments by combining a psychedelic-assisted dosing session with structured psychotherapy, rather than relying solely on talk therapy or daily medication.

Traditional treatments like SSRIs and cognitive-behavioural therapies require long-term use and may only be effective for a subset of patients. Psilocybin may produce rapid symptom reduction and promote emotional processing and neuroplasticity.

What form of psilocybin was used in the study?

Researchers cultivated (grew) magic mushrooms themselves, and then isolated and produced the active ingredient, psilocybin, the compound responsible for the psychedelic effects. They didn’t just use the mushrooms whole; they created a controlled, standardized form of psilocybin from them.
